Broccoli is also called cauliflower; brassica oleracea L.var.italica, calabrese, etc.. In a small vegetable garden, planting some broccoli not only can meet your own food but also can get a good profit from the market. So when is it suitable to plant open-ground broccoli? What is the method of planting it? What is the method of planting it?

1. In respect of when it is suitable to plant broccoli, as broccoli belongs to the vegetable growing at low temperature and under long sunshine, the suitable temperature for growth is generally 15~22°C, and it will not grow well when the temperature is out of this range. Broccoli like adequate light and is limited by temperature, therefore, the main planting time for the open-ground broccoli is in spring and autumn with suitable temperature. The broccoli harvested in spring is of higher quality than that harvested in autumn.

2. It is very important to choose a proper variety of broccoli. It is recommended to choose the variety with good commodity value and strong ability to resist to black rot, downy mildew and soft rot. For spring planting, generally such varieties as Chunxiu 70, Yanxiu, Xiulv are chosen. Fuzhi broccoli can be cultivated in summer or autumn. For planting in spring and autumn, we can also choose the new Lvxue broccoli that is middle and late ripe and other varieties alike. Generally, it is required to prepare about 18~20g seeds.

3. Choose proper seedling substrate, and loose, breathable and well drained half sandy soil as seedling bed soil with its pH ranging from 6~6.8, add on the seedling bed thoroughly decomposed, crushed and sieved the farmyard manure of about 5 kg per square meter and the acid ammonium of 50 grams, mix the farmyard manure with the ammonium acid and then well stir the mixture with soil and sieve them, thus increasing the soil fertility.

4. Sow the seeds after well preparing the seedling bed, and 5~6 square meters of seedling bed is needed for each mu of broccoli. In order to achieve the appearance of all seedlings after the first sowing, treat the broccoli seeds before sowing. Choose 25% Ridomil 500 times solution and Chlorpyrifos 1000 times solution to kill underground pests for the seedling bed. Seeds may be coated with Thiram coating agent or 2.5% Fludioxonil suspending coating agent. Because broccoli seeds are small, it is not easy to spread evenly if they are directly spread. We may mix the seeds with fine sand and then evenly spread without need to cover them with soil, spray water directly after sowing to let seeds and soil surface closely contact and keep the soil moist, cover the small vault over; for the autumn with high temperature, we need to use the sunshade net for cooling, thus beneficial for broccoli seedling emergence.

5. Seedling bed management. The seedlings generally may come out 48~72 hours after broccoli seeds are sowed. Avoid the seedling bed from being too dry or too wet, especially in the season with high temperature. In case of too much rain, it is necessary to get ready for drainage. Before watering, pay attention to avoid continuous rainy weather afterwards, and try to water around evening. When broccoli seedling cotyledons spread and turn green and may perform normal photosynthesis, we may remove the sunshade net, but from 8 am to 4 pm in sunny days, the sunlight is still very strong, we may adopt appropriate sunshade measures, and keep the sunshade net removed in the rest of the time. When broccoli seedlings have two leaves and one core, we may spray Chlorothalonil wettable powder 1000 times solution (75%) to prevent damping off, and then we may perform the normal seedling management.
